I made this mistake as a new manager.
I was careless with my language.
Here’s what I did:
👉🏼 I used generic language. Examples:
❌ “Can you look into it?”
❌ “Nice job”
👉🏼 I should’ve used specific language. Examples:
✅ “Can you review slides 7 and 8?
✅ “Thank you for adding the timeline. This helps the exec. team”
✅ “Can you please send me the report out by 10 AM CST today?”
Don’t make the mistake I did. Ask yourself:
→ Am I being specific?
→ Where can I be more specific?
→ How do I need to be more specific?
Specificity builds performance, being general builds confusion. Start getting specific today. Your teams will be glad you did.
